New Job, Geography and 3D Jensen
Jan. 20th, 2009 10:48 pmA longer than average post, but I haven’t posted in days so catching up :)
Started my new job yesterday, which seemed to be going well. Until Geography was brought into the equation.
Now I am fairly intelligent, I am an Excel whiz, can bend most computer programmes, backwards around my little finger, I am hard working, organised and dedicated, and I'm really good at English and Maths, but Geography!!!!
Geography is my nemesis, it was the blight of my school years, it followed me around like a really mean kid, laughing at me, every time I tried to figure out what the capital of (I don’t know) Spain is for example, and in all seriousness, I don’t know, seriously, I could not name one capital city, except London and Edinburgh.
I am the Bridget Jones of geography, ask me what country sits next to Germany, then laugh as I go red and stutter something about Switzerland.
Now this has never been a problem, because as I never became an explorer or a map maker, I never had much need for geography, so most people never find out about the fact that I am a total dunce whenever it comes to geography (except my husband who can still be counted on to laugh for close to an hour every time he is reminded of the fact that I once asked him which US states are in South America, and which are in North America) Yes I really did !!!!
So why has geography become an issue!!!! because the company I have went to work for is a ship management company, who manage ships worldwide, they want me to learn things like how to price the management of a bulk carrier, sailing with a west indies crew and leaving from port who knows where and travelling mainly through the pacific ocean. Now whilst they were very patient and gave me extremely understanding smiles every time I asked a shipping question methinks their patience might run out if I ask where specifically the pacific is again – No I am really not kidding, I suck, I have a mental block the size of the pacific when it comes to geography (ETA – I now know this much about the pacific http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ocean ) I really need to invest in a good map.
On the up side, job is very interesting, learning lots of new things, my office is gorg, with a wonderful view of Glasgow and the hills from my floor to ceiling window (Yay, seriously, one wall of my office is window!!!!!) the people are lovely and so far things are going great.
Now onto My Bloody Valentine (under LJ cut as I don’t want to spoil anyone, although there is nothing spoilery about the actual film in my post thought it better to be safe than sorry)
A prize of your asking for anyone who can tell me how many times I mentioned geography and 3D Jensen in this post J
